Jon Hanson is a watercolor artist based in Aarhus, Denmark, shaped by two landscapes: the wide-open quiet of the American Upper Midwest and the shifting light of the Danish coast. Born in Minneapolis–St. Paul, he carries the memory of long horizons, frozen lakes, and big skies—sensibilities that surface in the way he paints shadow, distance, and stillness.

He discovered watercolor in 2023 after moving to Denmark, drawn to a medium that feels both fragile and free, one that rewards presence over precision. His work often centers on contrast—light against dark, vast against intimate, calm against movement—capturing the subtle drama of landscapes, seascapes, and city scenes.

Inspired by the mix of urban edges, pastoral quiet, and coastal weather that defines Denmark, as well as the places he’s wandered throughout Europe, Hanson paints with an eye for moments where atmosphere meets memory.
